The march is stop start as bands play to the large crowds on the way but it is fun and the music will be great!

Once at the racecourse, you have the opportunity to relax and listen to the speakers, get something to eat, visit a wide variety of stalls or MOST IMPORTANTLY come and help on the stall in the main tent.

Permaculture Courses

There are some permaculture courses coming up at Abundant Earth (and plenty of other events and courses too). Here's my latest blurb about permaculture courses just two miles from Durham City on our amazing smallholding. We've been here nearly 25 years now.

We also have an open day / afternoon in our market garden on Sat July 19th from 2pm til 5pm. No need to book, just drop in, have a drink and a look around.

Details for Upcoming Courses

Sat July 19th 2pm to 5pm

A free open day (or rather afternoon) to come and see our market garden at Abundant Earth. Both Wilf and Lauren, who manage the one acre garden will be there to show you around, answer questions on what we do (grow veg using organic and permaculture methods) and how we do things (permaculture principles etc). Lots of hands-on things to show you like seed sowing, compost, raised bed management, biodiversity, soil fertility, rainwater harvesting etc. Lauren will also have plants and herbs for sale. We’ll provide some refreshments, by all means bring snacks and cake to share. It’s free so just turn up. Directions can be found here.

Sat July 26th 9.30am to 4.30pm

Systems Thinking with Amanda Woolley

(in person at Abundant Earth)

Amanda, a facilitator and coach who helps individuals and groups work well together, make effective decisions, and thrive with compassion and clarity with a PhD in decision-making psychology will be running a course here on Systems Thinking, which has had a massive influence on permaculture thinking from pioneers in that discipline such as Donella Meadows and Howard T Odum who delved deeply into systems including ecosystems and even coined the term sustainability. Whilst writing my permaculture principles book I did a bit of a deeper dive into Systems Thinking so I am super excited to be hosting this course.

Abundant Earth whole site tour

We have been managing Abundant Earth as a worker’s coop for nearly twenty years now and have been based on this land for nearly 25 years. There is a lot we can show you about what we have done and also why and how. This session focuses on the aspects of the site through a permaculture lens including the market garden, veg box, renewable off grid electricity, livestock, woodlands, buildings and more.

Amanda says about the course…rather than breaking problems into isolated parts, Systems Thinking invites us to observe the dynamic relationships and patterns that shape the behaviour of whole systems—whether organisations, communities, or ecosystems. You’ll explore feedback loops, unintended consequences, and leverage points, shifting from linear cause-and-effect thinking to a more holistic, relational perspective.
